On 23 September 1857, Jeremiah Lanphier, a lay missionary at the North Dutch Church in Lower Manhattan, opened a noon prayer meeting on Fulton Street. For the first half hour he prayed alone. By the end of the hour, five more men had joined him.

Within weeks the meeting was daily. By the spring of 1858, thousands were gathering to pray at noon across the city, in churches, halls and theatres. It became known as the Prayer Meeting Revival.

Questions to carry

  • What would it look like to stop and pray for your city at noon?

  • Who could you pray with this week?

  • What renewal are you asking God for?
